MaxLinear Optical Systems Engineer in Carlsbad, California

MaxLinear is seeking an Optical Systems Engineer to join our team. In this role you will be responsible for architecting, analyzing, and designing state-of-the-art optical broadband communications systems that are integrated in deep submicron CMOS, SiGe, GaAs, and other processes. Your will be actively involved in the design, prototyping, test and verification phases of the product development cycle in accordance with customer and standard specifications.

  • Co-architect DSP transceiver products and work with high-level architectures driven by the customer or marketing spec as well as providing accurate models for these concurrently with the chip design

  • Modeling and designing reference boards optimized for MaxLinear’s integrated circuit products

  • Work with Communications Systems and ASIC design teams to validate and debug test cases in FPGA environment in pre-silicon phase

  • Lead technical activities necessary to characterize, verify and validate chip, package and reference designs, as well as to correlate bench to production tests

  • You will be working closely with counterparts in ASIC design, RFIC, Communications Systems / DSP, and embedded software

  • Extensive knowledge of highly integrated optical-electrical systems, DSP algorithms, and signal modulation schemes

  • Proven experience with optical systems

  • Understanding of mitigation techniques for different types of optical system impairments is required, comprehending impairments in optical systems which impact on both BER and OSNR such as circuit mismatch, non-linearity, signal integrity loss, noise, and group delay

  • Broadband circuit analysis and PCB design, including facility with CAD tools such as ADS and Cadence

  • Exposure to system architecture of optical transceivers, including baseband DSP systems

  • Board-level, optical systems link modeling and design. This should include simulation and link budget of optical component, high frequency circuits, and DSP techniques (e.g. using CAD tools such Matlab and Systemvue)

  • Test, measurement and debug experience including on-board or on-wafer calibration and probing

  • Knowledge of DSP algorithms and modulation techniques

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related + 6 years of experience, or MS + 3 years of experience, or Ph.D.
