The City of Stockton's Public Works Department is seeking to fill a Janitor vacancy in the Operations and Maintenance division. This position reports to the Facilities Maintenance section, whose mission is to provide cost effective, reliable maintenance, janitorial and logistical support services to facilitate the delivery of safe, comfortable, high quality services in City facilities. Under general supervision, the Janitor performs routine custodial and cleaning duties and performs related work as assigned.
Schedule - The successful candidate will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule. In the 9/80 schedule employees work eight 9-hour days in a 2-week period, one 8-hour day and then receive one day off every other week. This means that every other weekend will be a three-day weekend. Working hours are 5:00 p.m. – 2:30 a.m. on the 9-hour days and 5:00 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. on the 8-hour day. To provide continuous janitorial services, candidate must be available for the following schedule: Tuesday through Saturday, with a Sunday/Monday weekend.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by Operating Engineers Local No. 3, Trades and Maintenance Unit (Classified/Represented)
This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity, and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list, the open list, or a combination of both.
This list may be used to fill future vacancies.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass an extensive Police Department background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.
This position is eligible to receive five (5) Veteran's Preference Points for entrance into the Civil Service. Veteran's Preference will not be granted on the promotional list. If you believe you may qualify for Veteran's Preference, a DD-214 Member 4 copy indicating at least 181 consecutive days of service must be received in the Human Resources office (see supplemental questionnaire for details in submitting DD-214 copy) by the final filing deadline.
Under general supervision, performs routine custodial and cleaning duties in municipal buildings and adjacent grounds; performs related work as assigned.
This is the working level class in the janitorial series. Work is performed without immediate supervision in an assigned area. This class is distinguished from Senior Janitor in that the latter is the lead supervisory level in this series, responsible for assigning and reviewing the work of janitorial staff.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors; sweeps and vacuums rugs; spot cleans carpets.
Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; dusts radiators.
Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash.
Washes doors, windows, walls, ceilings, venetian blinds and furniture; polishes metalwork.
Cleans and disinfects restrooms; restocks restroom supplies as necessary.
Cleans lighting fixtures and replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
Moves office furniture and equipment and may make minor repairs; reports the need for maintenance and repair.
Strips, seals and buffs floors.
Closes windows, turns off lights, and locks doors to secure buildings.
Maintains equipment and materials in proper condition.
Keeps basic records of work performed, time sheets, etc.
Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
Corrects or reports any safety or fire hazards.
Follows label instructions to mix and dilute cleansers, disinfectants and stripping agents to ensure proper strength for use.
Uses a wide variety of tools, equipment and supplies.
Reports unauthorized persons and other security problems.
Sets up meeting rooms and rearranges furniture.
Sets up stages for special events; operates curtains and lighting and sound systems; performs minor painting and carpentry repairs at the Civic Auditorium; moves risers and chairs to other sites for special events.
Possession of a high school diploma or GED and six months of experience in janitorial or custodial work.
Must possess a valid California driver's license. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to maneuver equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work evening shifts, standby, and overtime as necessary.
Proper cleaning methods, and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, janitorial tools and equipment;
Use and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in janitorial work; and
Safety practices and equipment related to the work.
Understanding and following written and oral instructions;
Completing assignments independently without immediate supervision; and
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
