Varian Medical Systems Director of Machine Learning in Palo Alto, California

Key Responsibilities:

The Director of Machine learning (DML) will manage efforts throughout the company to realize modern machine learning techniques, such as:

  • Formal data augmentation

  • Multi-task learning

  • Human-in-the-loop formalisms to data curation and labelling

The DML will technologically guide and manage the use of meta-learning in flagship product efforts, and in the use of any customization technologies.

The DML will manage a cross-company team, providing:

  • Cross-functional leadership

  • Guidance on:

  • Modern deployment of end-to-end training

  • Exploiting known features and human knowledge

  • Using AI to normalize data

  • Advice to centralize efforts to produce reusable latent spaces

The DML will interface with different engineering, science, UX, product, and medical teams in product planning, ensuring ML feedback loops are properly anticipated in our products. DML provides executive level reports detailing the progress in quarterly meetings.

Additionally, DML will:

  • Extract and present key findings at, and extract relevant technologies from, Machine Learning conferences

  • Be able to work from Palo Alto, CA at least two days a week to collaborate with peers post COVID

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of experience in Machine Learning or Data Science

  • 3+ years of technical management experience preferably in healthcare

  • Professional experience in multi-task learning

  • Fluent in Python (and at least one of Tensorflow and PyTorch)

  • Fluent in Machine Learning best practices for production code

  • Experience applying statistical skills to deep learning artifacts

  • Preferred:

  • Cross-departmental management experience

  • Knowledge of anatomy, biology, and/or biochemistry

  • Experience delivering presentations at the executive or board level, as well as the developer level

Degrees:

Masters or PhD in a Applied Math, Statistics, CS: AI or related field.
