Sr. Director, Global Operations and Site Leader

Position Summary:

Experienced senior operations leader needed to drive operations across the Pleasanton manufacturing sites in the SF Bay Area for production of life sciences instruments and consumables, including both made-to-stock (MTS) and made-to-order (MTO) products. This position will report directly to the Vice President of Operations for our Genetic Sciences Division ('GSD') within the Life Sciences Solutions Group ('LSG') of Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Experienced senior operations / site leader needed to lead an important and complex life science manufacturing location in Pleasanton CA. The site comprises matrixed functions and manufacturing value-streams supporting the production of life science consumables, including both made-to-stock (MTS) and made-to-order (MTO) products. This position will report directly to the VP Operations within the Genetic Sciences Division ('GSD') part of the Life Sciences Solutions Group ('LSG') of Thermo Fisher Scientific. Responsibilities include an intense focus on meeting customer needs in a complex and demanding environment which includes a mix of research use only (RUO) and clinical/IVD products, leading and ensuring all operations functions at the sites are performing at peak efficiency with proper internal communication and interfaces, and developing the operations and manufacturing teams while ensuring delivery of high quality products which are in compliance with all applicable manufacturing regulations. As the center of excellence, the site leader will be instrumental in connecting the global network to ensure alignment, collaboration and efficiency.

Key Objectives of the role:

  • Develop and communicate a vision and strategic objectives that aligns with the customer, operations and business strategy. Ensure alignment with matrixed functions and divisions.

  • Create and execute site wide employee engagement initiatives leading by example.

  • Facilitate and mentor the development of team members and front-line leaders to be exceptional players.

  • Develop team to ensure Pleasanton continues to be an exporter of talent with strong growth and succession pipeline.

  • Ownership for all site activities Drive site performance in all areas to ensure meeting goals and financial commitments.

  • Leverage key performance indicators that drive change and visibility to the team and leadership. Track, trend, and monitor routinely with active data analysis to target and drive results.

  • Monitor and manage progress on projects, ensuring key requirements and milestones are met.

  • Demonstrate ability to leverage financial acumen in manufacturing and apply knowledge to daily manufacturing operations, preparing capital requests, pro forma cost understanding, absorption improvement etc.

  • Plan and manage budgets, schedules and key operating metrics.

  • Responsible for the hiring, training, coaching and annual performance reviews of operations staff across respective value streams.

  • Define and establish clear objectives and expectations, providing direct feedback routinely for performance management and actively engaging in team development and advancement.

  • Effectively use prioritization mechanisms to utilize resources across teams to complete required workload.

  • Provide leadership and collaborate with other site leadership functions to achieve goals.

  • Drive compliance to applicable US FDA and global Quality System Regulations.

  • Coordinate the development of action plans when corrective steps (CAPA) are required and implement these in a timely manner.

  • Embrace continuous improvement and the PPI (Practical Process Improvement) business system by identifying projects and recommending appropriate course of action to maximize profitability and efficiency.

  • Ensure effective transfers of new products into production that meet all Quality requirements.

  • Ensure training is effective and that the team operates within the required regulatory guidelines by examining and testing plant-wide processes and products from a final product acceptance and compliance perspective.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline and/or equivalent experience. Master's Degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 7+ years of management experience in a complex manufacturing environment

  • Experience leading a fast growing site

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills both written and verbal and the ability to facilitate effective team interactions.

  • Ability to inspire and engage teams

  • Strong leadership ability with the capability to leverage diverse resources, respond quickly, understand the impact of changes and decisions, facilitate agreement, build collaborative relationships and focus on customer needs.

  • Ability to work with individuals at all levels and within all functions to actively coach technical and non-technical professionals to achieve maximum performance.

  • Practical application experience in continuous improvement methodologies and/or lean 6-sigma to improve processes, strengthen quality and drive efficiency.

  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to effectively use data in problem solving and to evaluate process changes and impacts.

  • Experience in leading an organization with a mix of Make to Stock (MTS) and Make to Order (MTO)/Custom products.

  • Ability to partner with and influence key stakeholders including Finance, R&D, Product Management and the Commercial Sales team.

  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated experience as a change agent with ability to influence and communicate at all levels in the organization.

  • Prior site leadership experience is required.

  • Audit experience within a cGMP environment with successful outcomes is valuable.
