The Billing & Collections Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the daily operations specific to their unit. The supervisor oversees and directs work team’s production and performance to insure proper utilization and effectiveness of assigned personnel. They are responsible for defining and delegating team member responsibilities to appropriate personnel in order to ensure a smooth, accurate workflow. The Supervisor works in tandem with the other department supervisors to manage the daily production of the team and assists in managing the overall operations of the department.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Have a working knowledge of computer applications

  • Demonstrate Leadership and Analytical Thinking capability

  • Requires working knowledge of insurance including Commercial Contracts, Managed Care, and Government Programs including Federal, State and local agencies

  • Have knowledge of basic medical terminology

  • Organizes workflow to ensure accurate and timely team performance

  • Supervises the work schedule, ensuring adequate and appropriate coverage of all positions at all times

  • Selects, and delegates training and orientation of new staff

  • Assigns staff responsibilities, and evaluates performance

  • Counsels employees on problem areas and performance

  • Works with staff to develop personal development plans, identify areas for improvement, and improve performance

  • Performs interviews, performance appraisals, provides coaching and feedback to staff adhering to the policies and procedures of the admitting department

  • Provides input for, and ensures staff compliance with, established organizational policies, objectives, safety, environmental and infection control standards

  • Possesses knowledge and ability to leverage technology, optimize the utilization of internal resources and improve the quality of work and information flows

  • Participates in administrative staff meetings and attends other meetings as assigned

  • Attends, and sometimes lead departmental meetings and contributes with suggestions, ideas and methods to improve quality of department / hospital operations

  • Reviews operational reports, identifies opportunities and problems and makes recommendations for improving customer service, patient throughput and process flow

  • Ensure all claims are billed and received by the payers for proper adjudication. This includes timely processing of allocated volume of accounts, based on established production guidelines and time parameters provided for workflow

  • Work any edits and denials in allocated workflow to achieve proper adjudication to payment. This includes, but is not limited to: verify insurance is correct, update insurance demographics, rebill claims not received, document the status of work performed, follow - up on outstanding adjudication items according to departmental guidelines, and is also responsible for billing secondary / tertiary claims along with providing supporting documentation to payers for additional payment

  • Maintain assigned work lists and resolve high priority and aged inventory

  • Identify and communicate issues to leadership, including payer, system or escalated account issues for timely resolution

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher)

  • 3+ years working in a hospital patient financial servicesdepartment, physician office setting, healthcare insurance company, revenue cycle vendor and / or other revenue cycle related roles

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology

  • UB - 04 Claims Experience

  • Detailed knowledge of coding, billing, payment posting, denial management, collections, payer contracts

  • Travel between two locations within San Bernardino. Main Location: Community Hospital of San Bernardino, 1805 Medical Center Drive, San Bernardino, CA (90%), Secondary Location: San Bernardino Medical Center, 2101 North Waterman Avenue, San Bernardino, CA (10%)

  • If you need toenter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptomsusing the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., enteringyour symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group - approvedsymptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are requiredto wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with anystate and local masking orders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher)

  • 3+ years experience in a supervisory role working with Direct Reports

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Creating spreadsheets, working with pivot tables and creating queries)

  • Experience with Government payers and collections - understanding of DOFR’s (Division of Financial Responsibility)

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
