Position Summary

The Pharmaceutical Chemist II reports to the Chemist II or Associate Scientist.

Catalent Pharma Solutions is actively hiring for a Pharmaceutical Chemist II in San Diego in our Injectables group. An individual at the Chemist II level will be responsible for executing and understanding formulation and analytical development experiments for injectable drug candidates with a greater degree of autonomy than a Chemist I. The individual should have some analytical background to support the characterization of small molecules and/or peptide drug products. Previous experience with preclinical or clinical injectable formulation development and aseptic techniques is desired. The individual will be expected to communicate the status of projects to management and clients, and manage project timelines. The individual should be able to propose solutions or approaches to investigate most scientific problems. The individual may be required to assist in the creation and/or revision of company SOPs. The Chemist II will be increasingly sought for training and mentoring of other colleagues. All duties will be performed in compliance with company standard operating procedures (SOPs) and GMP regulations, as appropriate.

The Role

  • Simple experimental design and execution of formulation and/or analytical studies for injectable drug candidates will be performed independently. Complex designs may need supervisor assistance;

  • Optimize or troubleshoot stability-indicating HPLC analytical methods when appropriate;

  • Develop lyophilization cycles for injectable products;

  • Data interpretation should be conducted with limited guidance. Individuals will be able to identify key factors from data and understand the importance of the findings;

  • Clear and accurate record keeping in laboratory notebooks and some secondary review of other colleague’s work for scientific accuracy and compliance;

  • Increase in client interaction will be a focus. Individuals may lead discussions with clients on technical topics relating to their project;

  • Develop understanding of cGMPs and Catalent SOPs and systems applicable to work performed;

​The Candidate

  • 4-year degree in a physical, chemical, biological, or pharmaceutical science required;

  • BS with 1 to 3 years of experience in pre-formulation or related techniques OR MS with 0 to 2 years of experience in pre-formulation or related techniques;

  • Previous formulation, analytical, and manufacturing experience strongly preferred.

  • Knowledgeable in cGMPs, IND-enabling formulation strategies, USP/EP compendial testing, and ICH guidelines.

  • Position requires candidates to possess a strong skill set in analytical and creative problem-solving skills, effective communication and time management skills, the ability to work under pressure and strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
