RESEARCH MANAGER (JD)

CENTER FOR INNOVATION

Classification: Level 1 / Class Code 2038 / Full-Time / Exempt / Benefited

THE ROLE

The Center for Innovation at the University of California Hastings College of the Law seeks a Research Manager to support the Center's research and to work directly with Professor Robin Feldman. The research topics and writing will relate largely to legislative and regulatory reform of pharmaceutical pricing, but may also include artificial intelligence, information integrity, intellectual property, and other topics. Data work will include mining of large data sets, along with statistical analysis and interpretation. The ideal applicant will have a J.D. and at least two years of law practice experience or legal research experience. This is a temporary contract appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performing legal research to support academic publications;

  • Writing sections of white papers and academic research;

  • Writing reports of results for funders and policymakers;

  • Editing papers designed for peer-reviewed or law journal publications;

  • Designing and implementing data analysis and research plans;

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.A. or B.S. and J.D.

  • Two years of law practice and experience or legal research

  • Policy and/or data research experience. Ideal applicants will have the opportunity to influence policy and public discussion through their data analysis and writing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Experience with or ability to learn research data sets along with languages needed to gather and interpret them;

  • Experience with or ability to learn legal research databases such as Westlaw and Lexis;

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, including grammar, spelling and punctuation;

  • Must be energetic, articulate, detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment;

  • As with many startups, the Center offices are set up as an open, cooperative workspace, rather than individual offices. The Research Manager must be comfortable with that working environment.
