Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated leader who will lead our Global Strategic Sourcing and Category Management team to support Kite’s Direct Materials and Services functions. This Senior Director of Supply Chain will be based in our Santa Monica, CA headquarters and report into the Executive Director of Supply Chain.

The Senior Director is accountable for a total $250M in category spend for the commodities of biologicals, chemicals, packaging (primary/secondary/tertiary), Logistics, contract manufacturing (CDMO/CMO), contract testing labs (CTL), and supplies. Additionally, the leader will drive the development and implementation of robust category and sourcing strategies as well as implement and own a new supplier engagement operating model along with ensuring supplier relationship management best practices are embedded in how we do business with our strategic, leveraged, and bottleneck suppliers. With a focus on quality, service, risk management, innovation, and cost savings, the Senior Director will be responsible for delivering total cost of ownership value while ensuring continuity and reliability of supply due to a make to patient supply chain. In order to do so, the leader will partner with Supply Chain, Quality, Process Development, Manufacturing, Legal, Regulatory, and Finance functions at Kite to source suppliers’ goods/material, on-board suppliers, negotiate contracts, manage supplier performance/risks, and manage the relationships.

Responsibilities of the Senior Director of Supply Chain – Global Strategic Sourcing & Category Management - Direct Materials and Services include:

  • Builds and leads an effective Sourcing and Category Team for direct materials and services to deliver on Kite and Technical Operations objectives and goals

  • Leads the development of one – two-year category strategies as well as the implementation and ownership of the Supplier Engagement Model

  • Establishes Supplier Relationship Business Forums as well as Supplier Performance measurement and dashboard

  • Implements a partnership engagement model with Technical Operations Stakeholders to influence and support business strategy leveraging supply market insights and align sourcing and category strategies

  • Champions a project portfolio pipeline of savings and value plans in alignment with category and business strategies to deliver sustainable productivity and supply

  • Develops and champions risk mitigation projects - e.g. Second Source

  • Collaborates with Business Partners to deliver year over year productivity and supply risk mitigation plans

  • Contributes to continuous improvement in sourcing processes, tools and operating model and develops team capabilities with full utilization of category, sourcing, contract management

  • Builds and fosters strategic supplier relationships utilizing supplier segmentation, spend analytics for direct materials –e.g. API/Biologics/Chemicals, Packaging, Single Use Technologies

  • Serves as a thought partner and actively challenge work to deploy the most comprehensive and creative solutions; remove barriers for team to ensure its ability to execute

  • Acts as a decision maker for category/functional sourcing strategy and supplier selection

  • Drives operating efficiencies by understanding business needs and complex supply markets

  • Accesses supplier capability and innovation for the business

  • Coaches and helps develop direct reports with a focus on talent management

  • Develops goals and prioritize team's work among multiple initiatives

  • Frames and drives cross-functional sourcing agenda as well as alignment between category strategy and the needs and requirements of regions, countries, and sites

  • Customizes sourcing strategy to drive value in specific functional environment regulatory context

  • Initiates and builds industry peer relationships

  • Provides support, mentorship and guidance to shape the dire material category strategies of direct reports

Basic Requirements:

PhD degree OR MA / MD degree with 12+ years’ experience with Supply Chain and/or Operations and/or Supply Management

OR

BS / BA degree with 14+ years’ experience with Supply Chain and/or Operations and/or Supply Management

OR

High School Degree with 20+ years’ experience with Supply Chain and/or Operations and/or Supply Management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diverse Global Sourcing / Procurement experience within the Pharma / Biologic / Cell / Gene Therapy industry

  • 15+ years of operations and Product Life Cycle, Supply Chain or Direct Materials experience

  • Excellency in direct material sourcing, contract negotiations, and supplier management

  • Strong understanding of best in breed eProcurement solutions - e.g. RFX solutions

  • Broad knowledge of the operational market forces shaping an operations business context (e.g. supplier base, legal and regulatory environment, sources of competitive advantage)

  • Demonstrated experience in identifying and utilizing full set of direct material and service sourcing levers to drive value for stakeholders in direct materials in a small or large molecule pharmaceutical and/or cell therapy environment

  • Ability to conduct benchmarking to address cost, quality, risk and innovation considerations as well as to provide thought leadership and actively shape strategy

  • Demonstrated ability to building a Category Teams and strong Supplier Relationship Operating Mechanisms

  • Ability to analyze, summarize, and present insights based on the needs of the audience as well as develop business cases and champion opportunities with quantifiable financial benefits

  • Independent self-starter and able to motivate others to accomplish ambiguous tasks

  • Ability to lead teams in a matrix organization, across geographic and functional reporting lines as well as lead, coach, and mentor direct reports

  • Demonstrated track record of identifying root causes to issues and proactively problem solving

  • Change management experience with large and complex organizational transformations

  • Ability to own and strengthen relationships with key customers and to champion change

  • Strong presentation and influence skills with a focus on collaboration

  • Global experience and an understanding of the nuances and differences among business cultures; able and willing to travel 15-25% both globally as well as domestically
