Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 to perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments. The position is based within the Neuropathology Core of the Stanford Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC), which is part of a nationwide network of congressionally mandated Centers of Excellence supported by the National Institutes of Health. The Centers of Excellence programs help establish critical research infrastructure; foster collaboration; train researchers, physician scientists, and other professional staff; and provide shared resources through core facilities.

Duties include:

  • Perform advanced histological techniques in human brain tissue to study neurodegeneration, including multiplex immunohistochemistry and mRNA in situ hybridization, and acquire and analyze microscopy images.

  • Support the Stanford ADRC Neuropathology core as follows: Help collecting postmortem human brain tissue from ADRC donors, organizing existing human tissue samples, creating and maintaining research sample databases, performing quality control experiments to evaluate brain bank research material, tissue cutting, staining, and immunohistochemical staining, and distributing fresh, frozen and fixed research samples to Stanford investigators.

  • Establish human post-mortem tissue cultures, expand cells, and cryopreserve and bank cell cultures; cataloguing samples in databases using a barcode system.

  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researchers.

  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.

  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.

  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage laboratory inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, Cell Biology, Genetics or related field.

  • Experience and knowledge of planning, performing, and interpreting the following:

  • Brain human tissue processing

  • Tissue sectioning, staining & immunohistochemistry

  • Immuno-assays (ELISA, western-blot)

  • In vitro cell and tissue culture

  • Brightfield and fluorescence microscopy

  • The candidate should be able to work independently, be highly motivated, adaptable and work well within a highly interdisciplinary team.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient computer skills

Education & Experience (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (REQUIRED):

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.

  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

Physical Requirments:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
