Lockheed Martin Optical Thermal Mechanical Engineer in Sunnyvale, California

The Optical Payload Center of Excellence at Lockheed Martin Space is seeking an experienced Opto-mechanical Engineer with deep expertise in thermal analysis and thermal management (passive and active control) for optical payloads. Defending against modern day missile threats requires constant collaboration and innovation. You will play a role in design and development work on a variety of passive, active, and directed energy optical payloads, which present a diverse range of cooling and thermal management challenges. You should demonstrate strong mechanical engineering skills, highly relevant and related experience, and a keen interest in optical payloads.

Your responsibilities will include: performing analyses of optical layouts, including structural, thermal, and optical design optimization, stray light heating estimation, solar/earthshine analyses, radiative analyses, heat transfer analyses, and a variety of design optimization calculations and estimates. You will be involved in the design, specification for heat pipes, phase-change material systems, conduction bars, radiators, heaters, and cryogenic systems, as well as test and ground support equipment.


- Work under the guidance of senior engineers;

- Collaborate and contribute across the design team;

- Engage with prospective and selected suppliers;

- Deliver robust documents and briefings, and;

- Support customer reviews

You would typically have a Bachelors degree with 5 years of professional experience, a Masters degree with 3 years.

**Please note that this role can be located in Sunnyvale, CA or Louisville, CO. Positions are currently contingent upon funding expected in the 4th quarter of 2020.***

Basic Qualifications:

• Professional work experience with some/all of the following: thermal design and engineering experience, optical subsystems and assemblies, and/or highly correlated high precision equipment

• Familiarity with space systems and the unique heat transfer and thermal engineering challenges they entail

• Experience with industry standard Computer Aided Design and Structural Analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, CREO, NASTRAN, and NX

• Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance; US citizenship is required.

Desired Skills:

• Practical and current design expertise in, space and/or missile defense optical payload systems

• Advanced Degree in Engineering or Science

• Proposal writing experience

• Ability to innovate and create intellectual property, demonstrated by patents, new products, or publications

• Experience using following software packages: CFD software (FLUENT, GASP, Pointwise, or other grid generation and CFD tools)

• Presently hold TS/SCI or have a current background investigation providing TS/SCI eligibility
