Abbott Principal Component Engineer, Mechanical Procurement in Sylmar, California

Our location in Sylmar, CA, currently has an opportunity for a Principal Component Engineer, Mechanical Procurement .

Responsible for leveraging both technical and business skills to improve our products, optimize value and support broader business and category sourcing strategies. These results will be achieved principally through a mix of efforts that lead to cost reduction, risk mitigation, and proactive engagement in partnership with internal supply chain partners to drive supplier performance. The scope of work for this role will be for the Abbott Cardiac Rhythm Management Division.


  • Collaborate with cross functional team members to develop strategies & projects to deliver improvements to products & key metrics (Ex: Quality, Cost, Delivery, Development)

  • Partner with suppliers to develop manufacturing processes, tooling, fixtures, etc. & support supplier process validations

  • Partner with cross-functional teams and suppliers to assess existing Value Streams & products to identify & implement improvement opportunities and mitigate supply chain risk

  • Leads projects to assure all activities are performed as required

  • Review, assess & implement supplier change requests

  • Maintain current knowledge of latest manufacturing technologies

  • As requested, partner with R&D to develop Design to Cost and Design to Value models for new & existing components and/or high-level assemblies

  • As requested, support assessments of internally manufactured components and/or assemblies for Make vs. Buy assessments

  • As requested, perform should cost analyses and models to support strategic procurement

  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.

  • Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.

  • Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors



  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Biomedical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering, operations, and/or supply chain organizations.

  • Minimum 3 years working in a highly regulated environment.

  • Background in manufacturing process development preferred.

  • Experience working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and Continuous Improvement methodologies preferred.

  • Experience with DFM, DTV, DTC, etc preferred.

  • Background in mechanical and/or electro-mechanical assemblies desired.

  • Experience with SPC, DOE, GR&R, other statistical methodologies, etc desired.

  • Solidworks experience is a plus.

  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.

  • Interactive interpersonal skills and a collaborative communication style

  • Ability to challenge and debate issues with data and view problems from several different points of view.

  • Multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.

  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.

  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

  • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Experience working with suppliers preferred.

  • Ability to travel approximately up to 20%, including internationally.
