The Health Safety and Environment Specialist provides expertise in the development, implementation and management of effective Safety, Health and Environment programs/systems. Routinely analyzes hazardous situations and identifies alternative courses of action.
Job Core Responsibilities
Works to develop, implement and maintain Health, Safety and Environmental programs/procedures
Performs audits and safety inspections of work environments, processes and operations in compliance with government regulations and industry standards
Ensures all applicable registrations, permits and licenses are in place and current; disposes of hazardous materials per regulations
Leads the safety committees, analyzes hazardous situations and identifies alternative courses of action, while empowering members to achieve departmental safety goals and objectives
Participates in developing and implementing training programs for employees
Gathers data for the purpose of identifying, reducing, or eliminating sources of pollutants and/or hazards that affect the work environment and health of the employees
Other responsibilities as assigned
Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance
Regular, consistent and punctual attendance is required. May need to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and additional hours as necessary
Education: Post-secondary degree in Occupational Safety and Health or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience that will allow successful performance of job expectations
Years of Experience: 3-5 years relevant experience
Extensive knowledge of industry Health, Safety and Environment regulations/standards
Solid knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets and hazardous waste disposal procedures
Strong attention to detail, good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize with changing situations
Ability to solve complex problems and make decisions based on the analysis of multiple sources of information
Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills to drive tasks to completion
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database management tools
